Paul Scholes believes Manchester United should try to sign Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann in the summer. United have earmarked Griezmann, 25, as their summer transfer window priority and M.E.N. Sport revealed in September Jose Mourinho was hopeful United’s French contingent could convince him to move to the club. Griezmann is contracted to Atletico until 2021 but his deal includes an £86million buyout clause and Scholes feels he could help United compete for the Premier League and Champions League. Scholes told German football magazine kicker: “If Griezmann is within reach, why wouldn’t we take advantage and try to sign him, especially if our youngsters aren’t at the level we need? “At United, there is always a lot of pressure to win the Premier League and the Champions League.” Griezmann shed doubt on a move to the Premier League in an interview on Tuesday and in a separate chat talked about the possibility of leaving Atletico after three years. Anthony Martial receives advice from Paul Scholes
“I feel great at the club and in Madrid,” Griezmann told Fifa. “On a personal level I’m very happy, and in football terms we’re about to move to a new stadium, which is very important. “We’ll just have to see what the future brings, but for now I’m very happy here and I hope to win trophies with this club.” On Tuesday, Griezmann said: “Who knows how the season will finish. If it finishes badly, maybe I will ask myself the question. For the moment, it is not relevant. “Aside from that, I am asking myself where I could go. In Spain, there is Barcelona and Real Madrid. Barcelona have the three up top. Real Madrid, that is impossible because of the club I am at. I think that between them, there is a pact.
Griezmann is United’s priority
“Germany, the league does not attract me much. France, not for the moment. And England, I have a lot of doubts about my private life. Everything like rain, bad weather. I need to feel happy outside.” Last week, Griezmann’s image adviser argued a move to United would be ‘ideal’ and Griezmann admitted in November he has asked France teammate Pogba about the experience of playing for United. The former Real Sociedad’s brother Theo has also regularly teased United supporters on Twitter. Griezmann revealed last year he wears long-sleeved shirts and covets the No.7 shirt because his boyhood hero was David Beckham. The United number seven is vacant following Memphis’ switch to Lyon.
